Highway 7 improvements

Tomlinson is a contractor that does highway related  construction work. The sign advertising their services on the land that will be a wider highway 7 also mentions they undertake "environmental services" .

Rideau antiques and Rideau Ferry

This is a view over the fence into the surreal yard of Rideau Antiques on county highway 1 south of Perth, past Rideau Ferry on the road to Lombardy . This enterprise is a landmark on the antiques circuit with a big reputation all over this part of Ontario and New York State. Since the destruction of the world trade center American business has dropped off a lot. This photograph does not exaggerate the apocalyptic character of this place, the house and barns are so densely filled with stuff that I feel like I need a machete just to move from one room to another. Inside, every object is priced.

Oh . . . and about Rideau Ferry. In 1816 in the forest on the shore of lower Rideau Lake where Rideau Ferry is now, there was an inn,  a ferry, and an innkeeper named John Oliver. When the inn was razed to construct a bridge the skeletons of an unspecified number of souls murdered by John Oliver were discovered beneath his home. Last night this was convincingly related to about 100 people by the " Parks Canada Players " in an entertaining historical drama played out in the woods.

 

Camp 132

Dead cedar twigs and a punky rotten log that some animal ripped apart looking for food.  I love cooking on our annual camping trips - last night we ate a tomato/basil/garlic parmesan pasta toss and the night before it was ginger/sesame/tamari marinated tofu stirfried with veggies and rice noodles. Better than the racoons got - you bet!

Entomologist for a day . . .

Unidentified, but I suspect to be true bugs (hemiptera) carapace, sucking mouth etcetera. Anybody who really knows is welcome to help me out here . . . Photographed under an orange tarp wich might explain the warm colours eh?

News Flash! I have identified this bug,  it is  Calopteron Reticulatum the Banded Net Wing. The elytra (the wing covers) are soft and look deceptively like wings - had me fooled. Larvae eats stuff under bark, adult eats decaying leaf matter juice.

Spiders and tents

Our tent fly with some lovely shadows and a  marble orb spider dropped by a bird in the morning. Our good friend and severe arachnophobic Laurie spied the shadow of a spider on the tent fly last night and retreated to the safety of her car, her daughter slept part of the evening in the ditch across the road with our daughter which is another (fun) story.

Pharmacies, opticians, dentists and clinics are an important part of the tenants on the street. Many of the newer buildings are occupied by health service industries.

This is a good example of residential architecture characteristic to this part of the street at some earlier time which I imagine was about 90 to 110 years ago. I suppose that once there were many buildings here that shared the look and feel of 551.
