This exhibition is called Parois d'intimité and it is at L'imagier in Aylmer (Gatineau) Quebec. There are three components to the installation, the part you see in the photographs, a video and another installation of molded, seated female figures made of household food wrap which are presented on the floor,. The exhibit is playful and fun and is the most recent of at least twenty years of exhibitions whose opening vernissage coincides with the summer solstice.

The image on the left is a sculptural work by Kim Adams, the painting is part of an informational installation on the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery which is being presented to bring attention to the human rights abuses occurring in China that are directed against people who practice Falundong.
On Sunday night, Michel Campeau and Marion Bordier visited Lorraine Gilbert's studio in Gatineau to meet together with some friends and colleagues to make an informal presentation of their portfolios and some work in progress. Michel travelled here from Montreal with a selection of prints from his current project on the darkroom called - le chambre noire - you can see some examples by following this link. Marion brought examples of her work from "les chemins de l' âme" which can be loosely translated as the roads of the soul. Online examples of her work can be found with these searches. Michel's new work is clearly connected with the other images and books by which I know his pictures. They use an autobiographical approach that is structured poetically and conceived of as sequences which may be presented in book form. The new portfolio is about the signifigance of the darkroom as a creative space - now old and obsolete -, its relationship to the viewer, our image culture and to Campeau himself ( so much of his work is self portraiture.) In the lower frame Campeau is seen using a Lee Friedlander book of self portraits to make a discussion point.

Marion's work from "les chemins de l' âme" is a hybrid of methods and ideas about self that have been produced by means of a an unusual process. Marion produced texts printed on paper which were in Spanish and French (for different exhibition contexts I believe.) These printed texts were passionnate epithets/sentences strung together - not a story, narrative or literature - such as Je t'abhorre. Tu me rend malade. Je te hais. . . . The prints of these texts were then made available (fed?) to escargots which effaced and destroyed the paper in some areas. The damaged words were then scanned and printed in a variety of ways - positive /negative sometimes with a red background. Finally, these images are then juxtaposed with long time exposure images of a model who is covered in fabric and constantly moving so that only a generalized definition of form remains.
Marion Bordier is the curator responsible for "LE SUJET CONSTRUIT EN PHOTOGRAPHIE" and Lorraine's studio is just upstairs from the gallery. Marion took the guests on a brief look through the exhibition rooms which are clockwise from the top left: Catherine Poncin from France, Claudia Liekam from Germany and Lorraine Gilbert and myself who are both from Ottawa.

" payment and pose " 1991, 2 C prints about 30x40 inches each. These images were made in Berlin shortly after (days after) the DDR mark was made obsolescent. The models are posed in the main train station and the two frames show the pose and them stepping forward to accept their modelling fee for the image from me. Not counting the arrangements which were made ahead of time my assistant and I entered the station set up and left within 10 minutes - a bit of a hustle. I love the way everyone's eyes are right on the money in the second shot. My intrepid assistant Melina Young pushed the shutter for me at the agreed upon moment.
"The Street" photo exhibition opened up last night at the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography in Ottawa simultaneously with another exhbition called "The Painted Photograph" . I was there because I am one of the artists in the first show. Personally, I thought it was a wonderful party and I was pleased with the whole affair - but I am a bit biased . Here is a link to some press material about the show. I will post an image of my work from the show sometime soon, but for the moment I will just put up a few people snaps from the evening.

Last week Axe Neo7 opened a group exhibition that includes work by Lorraine Gilbert, Catherine Poncin, Claudia Liekam and myself. The exhibition is called "LE SUJET CONSTRUIT EN PHOTOGRAPHIE" and the curator is Marion Bordier.

There are three pix here that we installed on Monday, and it was a lot easier to do than it looked like it was going to be. We supported the paper on coroplast, lifted it into position (flat, uncrinkled) and presto - there ya go. Big piece of paper wrangled into submission without a fight - whew!
