In honour of SLIAO's 10th Anniversary, we launched the first "Phil Parker Lecture" in November /08. Our intent is to annually invite a noted speaker to come to Ottawa for an inspiring event that would bring together all members of the Deaf and interpreting communities in the Ottawa region.
SLIAO's lecture series is named in honour of Phil Parker who began his involvement with the Deaf community in the early 70's as Ottawa Regional Director of the Canadian Hearing Society. He quickly learned Sign Language and has become a trusted and beloved friend to many. After leaving the CHS, Phil worked full time as an ASL interpreter and was instrumental in establishing SLIAO. He was the first President of SLIAO until his retirement in 2007.
We welcome your suggestions of future guest presenters. Please contact us at asl.interpreting@sliao.ca with your ideas.

Jolanta Lapiak
Oct 1 /09 Opening Ceremony Presentation: In the eye of phonocentrism

Her work explores artistic and literary elements in ASL, grammatology (art/science of writing) and various ways of writing/speaking with a unique blend of cinematic vocabulary, lingual choreography, verbal caligraphy, poetry and storytelling techniques, using ASL.
Oct 3 /09 Workshop: Whose Space? A relationship between space and language
Ameslan people occupy a unique conflicting position between being Deaf (viewed by phonocentric society as "disabled") and being Ameslan (perceived by themselves as a distinct culture and language). What space do bilinial Ameslan, who share the same citizenship and public space with englishs peaking Canadians, occupy in this society? How is space related to language? How can Ameslan people serve and participate in public space in the world of art without being an outsider? This discussion touches on a complex and important issue for Ameslan people in Canada.
