Councillor Alex Munter will run for Mayor in the next municipal elections , on June 29 he held a sparsely attended news conference at the Plant Bath on Somerset Street to speak about user fees in the community centres. A young student from Devonshire school (just over the bridge immediately to the west) spoke in support of his position.

The intersection at Somerset and Preston is still a very Italian part of town. Preston street ("Corso Italia" ) is the secular heart of the Italian community for night life and community events .  After today's quarterfinal victory in the FIFA championship hundreds of people blocked traffic , waved flags and made a noisy assertion of their pride in the performance of the Italian soccer team.

930 Somerset street is the Plant Bath

This is the front door to the Plant Bath at the intersection of Somerset and Preston Street on the south west corner. The detail seen here is a relic of the original building which was gutted and rebuilt with a modern facility which opened after considerable politicking and community pressure 2 years ago.  The spectator door that you see here is only a facade and when you proceed through this door you will find a large modern multi purpose room  .

This is a federal government building for the department of Supply and Services. The legislation that came into effect on Monday of this week will even prohibit people smoking outside the entrance to this building too.

Parson's Refigeration is on the ground floor . This building on the north side of the street near the bridge overlooks the City Centre site which is a prime development candidate.Whenever development proceeds it will be a harbinger of major change for the immediate neighbours in the area. Light rail transit improvements may also signifigantly affect this neighbourhood.

1002 Somerset - Tam's Dragon and the elephant

At 1002 Somerset the Vietnamese Unified Buddhist Congregation has a community centre and Temple. These objects were photographed there. The dragon was in an alcove being constructed by a man I know and it was set afire by some person unknown. The alcove that the dragon was in has now been closed off from public access. The fire happened on June 9 , 2005. The dragon was a beautiful thing when I saw it, it is a real shame it no longer exists.
