Happy Buns Bakery will change its name in the near future as announced on the notice tape to their door. This was not a complete surprise. 1057 Somerset is at the western frontier of the chinatown/asian community on Somerset street.
click image to enlarge Takaki motors is on a stub end of Breezehill Avenue, but has an entrance on Somerset on the bridge. This is a unique and wonderful adition to the streetscape here.

The westernmost end of the street is a different world. The bridge (after construction - it is a fairly recent feature) is a barrier which has separated communities. Recently, asian businesses have begun to colonize this stub end of Somerset which was previously isolated by the bridge/barrier over the railway track. This part of the street is changing quickly.

Parson's Refigeration is on the ground floor . This building on the north side of the street near the bridge overlooks the City Centre site which is a prime development candidate.Whenever development proceeds it will be a harbinger of major change for the immediate neighbours in the area. Light rail transit improvements may also signifigantly affect this neighbourhood.

This is the OC transpo bus shelter. This building used to house a Carribean bakery . It is now occupied by the Parkdale Food Centre whcih is a food bank. You enter the food bank at the back door.

The Bangkok Grocery is almost at the southeast corner of Booth street .

The Yang Sheng restaurant is open late and is a well loved student/bohemian kind of place that I have frequented for more than 30 years. The barbeque meat counter has its own entrance and gets a lot of traffic - it is also right beside the number 2 bus stop. There are only five barbeque counters in Chinatown - they are at the Kowloon Market, Wa Kiu, Mamphong, Double Happines BBQ and the Yang Sheng. This one is the oldest.

There are two high rise apartment buildings on Somerset West and they are both close to Bank street where the white painting and condominium construction is most intense.

At 752 Somerset there is an Optician's shop (my father is an optometrist), The Gracious Christian Light Centre, a pharmacy and a view across Bell street to St Peter's Chinese Anglican church. All very picturesque - if you like that kind of thing.
