1102 Somerset was the site of a commissioned graf style sign

This is gone now . I am not sure if it was painted over as part of the City of Ottawa graffitti eradication program or not. It was well done and added a lot of character to the intersection. This is the same building where Nesrallah's grocery was located.

1075 to 1071 Somerset Street West

This row of stucco covered buildings is at the north west corner  of Bayswater Avenue. The easternmost unit was home to an exciteable collie dog that was usually behind the fence. I have not seen that dog for some time.

1053 Wellington Street is a Vietnamese restaurant

This residence has a Vietnamese restaurant on the ground floor and was the western "frontier" of the asian businesses for some time. I suspect that business has improved since a large Asian supermarket opened across the street a few years ago.

This building is across the street from the large "New 168" market just west of the O train bridge on the north side. The upper floor has not always been occupied by the current tenant - there was a massage parlour located here briefly about five years ago. The area around the bridge is a "stroll" for prostitutes although there seem to be less of them than in past years. Devonshire Public School is just up Bayview behind the viewer's back.

The western end of Somerset

This is the western end of the street where Somerset Street terminates and meets Wellington street in Hintonburg . The angle of view of the panorama is almost 360 degrees. Beginning on the left side of the image the view is as if you were turning your head from left to right - The left edge is more or less looking south to south east. This is where Somerset intersects Wellington and when you get to the left edge of the picture you are looking at the bridge over the O train tracks to the east. There is a bigger file to view here.

June's shop at 1094

June is the name of the owner of this rather good curio/junk/nostalgia store. She had a much larger shop further west past the end of Somerset Street (1094 is almost at the western end . . . ) near the corner of Wellington and Stirling Avenue . June was a pretty serious  player in the "picking" and second hand business. A fire levelled the building and effectively ended that. It is nice to see her back - even at a smaller scale.

1098 Somerset

There have been a lot of different businesses here in recent years. It was Nesrallah's grocery for a long time but the proprietor was very elderly and gradually he stayed open  less and less. At the end he was only open about 1 day a week. After he was gone, half the store seemed to be storage, then it became a used goods store, then a chinese pop/collectible/stuffed toy store opened and quickly failed. A quick rennovation of the property made room for Chachi's Pawn Shop and the India Express take away curry kitchen. The bookstore has only been there for two months and I am sad to see him go so soon because he has excellent books at reasonable prices.
